Also, this is a great time to check the batteries in your smoke alarms, and replace the battery if needed. If your alarm is more than 10 years old, it should be replaced. Oregon law requires all ionization-only smoke alarms sold in the state to have a hush feature, and if the alarm is battery-operated, it must come with a 10-year litium battery. Those that are connected to your home's electrical system use a standard 9 volt battery as a "backup". It is important to make sure you have fresh batteries in these alarms in the event that your home's electrical system fails. It is also a good idea, while checking the battery, to vacuum the alarm to get rid of any dust.
If you have an older home, it may contain a minimal number of smoke alarms. We suggest that you have a smoke alarm on every level of your home, and outside each sleeping area. This is the current code requirement for all new home construction.
Working smoke alarms save lives!
