Smoke Alarm Program

We realize that many of the homes on the Ranch are not "new" homes. There have been different "code" requirements for the number and location of smoke alarms over the years. As a result, many homes have fewer smoke alarms than are currently required in new construction.

To see the current recommendations for smoke alarms, and to answer questions you may have about smoke alarms, visit the Oregon State Fire Marshal's "Smoke Alarm Q & A sheet" at:"

Because most fire deaths are caused by "SMOKE", not fire, having working smoke alarms placed in the proper locations in your home can help save your life!

In addition to having adequate amount and placement of smoke alarms, it is also recommended that all smoke alarms be replaced every 10 years.

The current smoke alarms also have some new features, like a "Hush" button. If the alarm is accidentally set off, say from burning food on the stove, the Hush button allows you to "silence" the alarm for a few minutes until the smoke clears. This new feature is designed to stop people from removing or disabling the alarm when it goes off accidentally.

We urge all of our residents to have new, working smoke alarms, placed in the appropriate locations throughout their homes. Please review the current recommendations, and if need be, please bring your home up to those recommendations. If you need assistance installing new detectors, we can help.

If you, or someone you know living on the Ranch has older alarms and cannot afford to replace old alarms, please let us know. We will provide up to two alarms for the sleeping quarters of your home. We are concerned about the safety of our residents.

There are also "visual" smoke alarms for the "hard of hearing" or "deaf" through the State Fire Marshal's Office, and we can assist with those also.
